Ténèbres: Works based on François Couperin Leçons de Ténèbres
Catalog Number: BR8999
On TÉNÈBRES, Brooklyn-based composer Sean R. Ferguson reimagines the French Baroque Leçons de Ténèbres tradition in a blazing 12‑movement trio for organ, cello, and electric guitar. TÉNÈBRES explores boundaries and connections, weaving sacred resonance, modern timbre, and classical lyricism into a contemporary chamber ritual. François Couperin birthed its original, sublimely simple vocal lines cast over a figured bass as an outcrying of faith. From on high he sent fire, it went deep into my bones.
Ferguson’s foundational conception for TÉNÈBRES was to ignite the body — an answer to a collaboration with choreographer Tom Price of tompricedance — seeking bold new territory, where the past is not encased in amber, but malleable and folded through a prism for the future.
The accompanying cover art by Anthony Henderson is an apt mirror for Ferguson’s sonic architecture: lattice-like barriers fractured by illumination, shadow yielding to form and resonance. Developed within the UltraMedia framework, a system Ferguson created with NYC’s bitsANDwaves, in which live music and reactive visuals converge, TÉNÈBRES is both homage to Couperin and a modern experiment: a meditation on light and shadow to send fire deep into our bones.
