24 Preludes for Violin and Piano

24 Preludes for Violin and Piano
Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe give the world première recording of Lera Auerbach's 24 Preludes for Violin and Piano (1999), a cycle that travels the complete circle of fifths to touch every major and minor key. Composed when Auerbach — pianist, poet and one of the last artists to defect from the Soviet Union — was only twenty-six, the Preludes reassert the expressive possibilities of tonality, uniting twenty-four miniatures into a single arching composition. The programme is completed by T'filah ('Prayer'), a searching work for solo violin written in response to the Holocaust, and the reflective Postlude for violin and piano. Gluzman plays the 1690 'ex-Leopold Auer' Stradivari, on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago. Classics Today awarded the album its highest 10/10 rating.
