A Swedish Serenade
Catalog Number: BIS285
Swedish string orchestra music: Dag Wirén's beloved Serenade Op.11 (1937), inspired by Les Six, alongside works by Lars-Erik Larsson, Ingvar Lidholm and Björn Söderlundh, played by the Stockholm Sinfonietta.
Dag Wirén's Serenade for Strings (1937) rapidly became his most frequently performed composition and one of the most charming works in the Swedish orchestral repertoire. Inspired by study in Paris and the wit of Les Six, its four movements are worked out with stylistic perfection — transparent structure, refined and spontaneous music. Wirén summed up his artistic credo as 'I believe in God, Mozart and Carl Nielsen.' Lars-Erik Larsson's Little Serenade for String Orchestra Op.12 is an equally winning work from the same period. Ingvar Lidholm, associated with the post-war Monday Group of Swedish composers, represents a more radical strand; and Björn Söderlundh rounds out this portrait of mid-twentieth-century Swedish music for strings. The Stockholm Sinfonietta performs throughout.
