This first volume traces Isaac Albéniz’s journey from cosmopolitan salon composer to the creator of Iberia, one of the towering monuments of the piano repertoire. Book I of the suite – Evocación, El Puerto and Corpus Christi en Sevilla – distils Andalusian song, dance and religious ritual into music of daring harmonic richness and orchestral keyboard writing, here shaped with clarity of texture and finely graduated colour. Around it stand the earlier 12 Piezas Características, charming character pieces in which hints of genuine Spanish rhythm and melody gradually deepen, culminating in the atmospheric Torre Bermeja, already pointing towards the mature style. The barcarolle Mallorca closes the programme with a spacious, nobly sung seascape. The pianist bases his reading of Iberia on the composer’s manuscripts, bringing scholarly care to performances that remain spontaneous and vividly alive.
