Allan Pettersson - Seven Sonatas for Two Violins
Catalog Number: BIS1028
Allan Pettersson's Seven Sonatas for Two Violins (1951), compact and intense, performed by Duo Gelland, alongside shorter early works for violin and piano with pianist Lennart Wallin.
Allan Pettersson (1911–1980) is best known for his monumental symphonies, but the Seven Sonatas for Two Violins (1951) reveal a more intimate side of his creativity. These compact yet intense pieces span a range of moods — from turbulent Allegros to reflective slow movements and waltz-like episodes — and make considerable demands on their performers. Duo Gelland, Martin and Cecilia Gelland, bring focused musicianship to these demanding works, playing on superb historical instruments. Complementing the sonatas are shorter pieces for violin and piano: the Lamento (1945), Two Elegies (1934), Romanza (1942) and Andante espressivo (1938), performed by Martin Gelland and pianist Lennart Wallin. Together they offer a compelling portrait of Pettersson's early creative world.
