An Anthology of Icelandic Choir Music
Iceland's choral tradition reaches back to the medieval Offices of St. Thorlak from the thirteenth century, and this disc traces that tradition through to contemporary times. Jón Leifs (1899–1968) was a pioneer in bringing Icelandic musical identity to the international stage, and the composers represented here all draw on this rich heritage. Gunnar Reynir Sveinsson, Jón Ásgeirsson, Atli Heimir Sveinsson and Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson each contribute works that blend the simple sincerity of folk melody with original compositional thinking. Kór Langholtskirkju, directed by Jón Stefánsson, performs with characteristic Nordic clarity and warmth.
