Atterberg - Symphony No.6
Catalog Number: BIS553
Atterberg’s Sixth unfolds from sober grandeur to a sly, rondo-finale wink, flanked by a radiant Värmland homage and a late Ballad steeped in ardent melody and symphonic poise.
Written for Columbia’s Schubert centenary competition, the Sixth Symphony marries classical clarity with Atterberg’s warm, Nordic lyricism; the first two movements speak in “deadly earnest,” while the finale—strictly a rondo—launches a deliberately commonplace tune that toys with fugue and wit, earning the work its “Dollar Symphony” moniker. The central Adagio, with its folk-tinged inflections, provides the set’s most inward, cantabile reflections before the music turns light-footed and playful. The Värmland Rhapsody, composed at the request of Swedish Radio for Selma Lagerlöf’s 75th birthday, sings with affectionate regional melody—music that seems to glow with autumnal air and unhurried charm. Completing the portrait, the late Ballad Without Words dispenses with folklore, unfolding a passionately melodic argument in balanced sonata form; its imaginative development lets four motifs intertwine—at times simultaneously in different keys—while the orchestration remains richly, romantically upholstered. The album as a whole traces Atterberg’s gift for songful line, structural craft, and a humane, quietly playful spirit.
