The Värmland Rhapsody, composed at the request of Swedish Radio for Selma Lagerlöf’s 75th birthday, sings with affectionate regional melody—music that seems to glow with autumnal air and unhurried charm. Completing the portrait, the late Ballad Without Words dispenses with folklore, unfolding a passionately melodic argument in balanced sonata form; its imaginative development lets four motifs intertwine—at times simultaneously in different keys—while the orchestration remains richly, romantically upholstered.
