This recording showcases the vibrant, elegant sound world of Osvaldas Balakauskas (b. 1937) — one of Lithuania’s most influential composers and a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize. His music, rooted in modernist discipline yet infused with jazz-inspired rhythm and melody, is represented here through four concertante works written between 1966 and 1999. The Concerto Brio for violin and chamber orchestra (1999), written for violinist Rusnė Mataitytė, sparkles with chromatic pentatonic harmonies and rhythmic swing. The Concerto for Oboe, Harpsichord and Strings (1981) draws on an inventive nine-tone “enneatonic” mode, while Ludus modorum (1972) for cello and orchestra explores multiple stylistic worlds — from pentatonic and whole-tone to quasi-serial and jazz idioms. The early Concertino for Piano and Strings (1966, rev. 1994) already displays Balakauskas’s hallmark combination of structural clarity and expressive energy. Performed by outstanding Lithuanian soloists and the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra under Donatas Katkus, this collection captures Balakauskas’s unique synthesis of intellect, lyricism, and rhythmic drive — a composer whose music bridges Baltic rigor and cosmopolitan spirit.
