Bartók - Piano Music
Catalog Number: BIS182
Bartók's piano music: Three Burlesques Op.8c, Allegro barbaro and Five Songs Op.16 — alongside the Dance Suite and Six Romanian Folk Dances — performed by Robin McCabe with characteristic rhythmic energy and lyrical depth.
Béla Bartók (1881–1945) transformed the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe into a distinctly modern language. The Three Burlesques Op.8c (1910–11) display his wit and rhythmic invention, from the quarrelsome first piece to the capricious third. The Allegro barbaro (1911) is one of his most immediate works, driven by ostinato rhythms of irresistible force. The Five Songs Op.16 set texts by Endre Ady, one of Hungary's greatest poets, in a spare and angular style. The Dance Suite (1923), originally written for orchestra and here in its piano version, and the Six Romanian Folk Dances (1915) complete a wide-ranging portrait of Bartók's folk-inspired world. Robin McCabe brings both technical precision and natural musicality to the piano works.
