Beamish: ´River´ - Concertos
Catalog Number: BIS971
A vivid and poetic exploration of myth, faith, and nature, where shifting instrumental colours and expressive solo voices trace a path from introspection to elemental energy.
Gramophone: Editor's Choice; Music Web International: outstanding; Penguin Guide 3 stars.
Drawing on literary, spiritual, and folkloric sources, this programme reveals a composer shaping narrative into sound with striking clarity and imagination. The viola concerto unfolds as a deeply personal meditation on human frailty and redemption, its драмatic contrasts and austere textures creating a sequence of scenes that feel almost cinematic in their intensity. In the cello concerto, inspired by Ted Hughes’s river poems, the music flows with a natural, organic sense of transformation—its luminous orchestration and fluid solo writing capturing both stillness and surge, reflection and movement. The oboe-led work, rooted in Scottish legend, sustains a single, evolving arc in which instrumental colour and gesture continuously transform, evoking a world of incantation and metamorphosis. Throughout, the soloists bring a finely judged balance of virtuosity and inwardness, while the ensemble responds with transparency and vivid detail, allowing the music’s shifting emotional landscapes to emerge with eloquence and depth.
