This ambitious anthology spans three centuries of Brazilian piano composition, tracing the development of an art music tradition from colonial times through to the 20th century. The programme moves from early pieces by Luiz Álvares Pinto (1719–89) and Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847–1935) — Brazil's pioneering female composer — through to modernist works by Camargo Guarnieri, Cláudio Santoro and César Guerra Peixe. Alberto Nepomuceno, Francisco Mignone, Leopoldo Miguéz and others fill out the picture, offering a richly varied journey through Brazilian musical culture. The result is a disc that reveals how this tradition absorbed European influences while developing a distinctly Brazilian voice.
