Special Offer
This album presents the Scandinavian Brass Ensemble, founded in 1984 for the International Brass Congress in Bloomington, Indiana. Gathering leading players from the major orchestras of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, the ensemble embodies centuries of Nordic brass tradition, from royal trumpeters of the 17th century to today’s symphony musicians.
The program spans Bengt Hallberg’s jazz-tinged arrangement of the folk tune The Blacksmith’s Song, Vagn Holmboe’s powerful Concerto for Brass, and Trygve Madsen’s lively Divertimento and arrangement of the Norwegian folk tune Per Spelmann. Edvard Grieg’s Funeral March for his friend Nordraak appears in its rarely heard brass version, while Atso Almila’s Te Pa Te Po and Christer Danielsson’s contributions add modern rhythmic and tonal colors. Conducted by Jorma Panula, this live recording from Gothenburg on May 27, 1984, documents a unique Nordic collaboration that won standing ovations at home and abroad.
