Benjamin Britten’s music often returns to the poetic world of evening and night — a realm of reflection, imagination and uneasy dreams. This recording traces that atmosphere across works from different stages of his career, beginning with the youthful Sinfonietta, written at eighteen yet already displaying the clarity of thought and distinctive orchestral imagination that would define his mature style. Its chamber-sized forces and sharply etched textures reveal a composer equally influenced by continental modernism and the lyrical traditions of British music. The later vocal works explore a more inward landscape.
