Bull - Pavans and Galliards
Catalog Number: BIS729
John Bull was the great keyboard virtuoso of the Elizabethan age, and his pavans and galliards show him at his most brilliant and profound. Joseph Payne plays the Chromatic, Fantastic, Spanish and Quadran pavans and more on the harpsichord.
Together with Byrd and Gibbons, John Bull (c.1562–1628) was one of the leading figures of the English virginal school, which created a true and idiomatic harpsichord style at a time when continental keyboard music still largely imitated vocal writing. More than 140 of Bull's keyboard works survive, and they reveal not just a fleet-fingered virtuoso but a complex and cosmopolitan musical personality. This recital gathers his pavans and galliards, including the Chromatic (Queen Elizabeth's) Pavan and Galliard, the Fantastic Pavan and Galliard, the Pavan and Galliards 'St Thomas Wake' from the famous print Parthenia, The Spanish Pavan, The Trumpet Pavan and two settings of the Quadran Pavan and Galliard. American harpsichordist Joseph Payne is the soloist.
