Burlesque Trombone
Catalog Number: BIS0318
Burlesque Trombone: a disc that proves the trombone is far from a 'king of instruments' — with humorous programme notes, virtuoso showpieces and music that runs the full range from Jacques Castérède's Sonatine to Norwegian folk songs.

The trombone has always attracted a certain irreverence, and this disc leans into it fully. The programme notes begin with the satirical observation that 'all of Beethoven's, Brahms's, Tchaikovsky's and Mahler's symphonies are, in point of fact, trombone concertos which seem later to have been re-orchestrated because trombonists demanded such exorbitant fees.' Jacques Castérède's Sonatine pour trombone et piano (1958) is described as a work 'where the trombone strikes as a soloist', and it represents the serious face of the programme alongside Deux Danses and other works. Norwegian and other folk-influenced pieces complete a disc that celebrates the trombone's lyrical and comic potential in equal measure.
