This programme traces a distinctly Finnish modernism through sound at its most exposed and eloquent. Nordgren’s Butterflies draws on the uncanny atmosphere of Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan, letting fleeting “Japanese” inflections—rhythmic suggestion, hymn-like echoes—surface within a free, fantasia-like form. Bergman’s Midnight turns the guitar into a small orchestra of timbres, extending its palette with tremolo, pungent pizzicati and unexpected percussive colour, shading the music with nocturnal unease. Heininen’s …touching… goes further, building a four-register motif into layered, sliding continuities and newly invented techniques, where sonority itself becomes narrative. The inward gaze deepens in Stenius’s organ partita: an ascetic, incense-dark journey in which the chorale remains veiled until the end, as if revealed through mist. Nummi’s Sydänmaa (Wilderness) closes the circle—songs of footpaths, marsh, silence and distant hills, where the lied’s “monumentality” is found not in grandeur, but in the vastness of inner space.
