C.P.E. Bach - Keyboard Concertos, Vol. 10
Catalog Number: BIS914
A vivid glimpse into C.P.E. Bach’s Berlin years, where elegance, expressive depth, and experimentation meet. These keyboard concertos and sonatina reveal a composer balancing courtly refinement with a new, more personal musical voice.
Klassik Heute: outstanding.
Written across more than fifteen years, the works on this recording trace the evolving musical language of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach during his time at the Prussian court in Berlin. In the early concerto, the graceful galant style still prevails: lively rhythms and transparent textures allow the solo keyboard and strings to interact with ease, while the slow movement reaches a deeper emotional register through unexpected harmonic turns and moments of pathos. By contrast, the later B-flat major concerto reveals a more sophisticated and introspective voice, its expressive nuance and refined structure suggesting music intended for a discerning and intimate audience rather than the public concert hall.
The Sonatina in F major offers yet another perspective. Designed for the emerging culture of public concerts, it blends concerto-like dialogue with the lighter architecture of the sonata. Its succession of contrasting sections, playful surprises and moments of virtuosity reflect Bach’s imaginative approach to form and his ability to engage listeners with wit and unpredictability. Performed on the distinctive tangent piano, whose varied colours and resonance illuminate the music’s quick changes of mood, the interpretation highlights the expressive freedom and experimental spirit that place C.P.E. Bach at the heart of a transforming musical world.
