C.P.E. Bach: Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 3
Catalog Number: BIS882
One of C.P.E. Bach's most adventurous early collections: the Six Sonatinas of 1734, framed by two substantial sonatas, one of them revised decades later in Hamburg. World premiere recordings, played with vivid character by Miklós Spányi on a period clavichord.
This third instalment in Miklós Spányi's survey of C.P.E. Bach's solo keyboard music presents world premiere recordings from the composer's formative years. At its centre stand the Six Early Sonatinas, W.64, written in Leipzig in 1734 shortly before Bach left to study law in Frankfurt an der Oder, each a compact three-movement work cast in a single key in the manner of a Baroque suite. They are framed by the Sonata in D minor, H.5, whose perpetual-motion opening looks back to the preludes of the Well-Tempered Clavier, and the Sonata in E flat major, H.16, which Bach continued to revise as late as the 1780s while music director in Hamburg. Spányi plays a 1993 clavichord built by Joris Potvlieghe after Saxon models of around 1770, its intimate sound well suited to the youthful inventiveness of these scores. Together the works trace C.P.E. Bach's emergence from his father's shadow into a voice of his own.
