In their galant clarity and songful melodic writing, they anticipate the more concentrated style of Bach’s later Hamburg sonatas. Transparent textures, elegantly ornamented themes, and the frequent use of varied reprises lend the music both immediacy and refinement, while sudden harmonic turns and expressive dissonances hint at the empfindsam depth beneath the surface grace. Though modest in scale, the sonatas demand sensitivity to nuance rather than virtuoso display. Miklós Spányi responds with a finely shaded touch, allowing the clavichord’s supple, intimate voice to illuminate the music’s quicksilver contrasts and cantabile lines.
