Franz Danzi (1763–1826) was a key figure in the development of the wind quintet as a genre. His three Op.67 Quintets — in G major, E minor and E flat major — exemplify the new eighteenth-century ideal of independent, individual voices rather than mere harmonic support, each instrument given equal weight and personality. The works are elegant, inventive and full of charm, pointing forward to the later quintets of Reicha and beyond. The Piano Quintet in F major Op.53, cast for the more unusual combination of piano, flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon, demonstrates Danzi's command of the mixed-ensemble medium with equal fluency.
