Dvořák - Slavonic Dances
Catalog Number: BIS425
Dvořák's two sets of Slavonic Dances, Op. 46 & 72, in a Penguin Guide 3-star recording with the Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic under Leif Segerstam — irresistible Czech folk rhythms at their finest.
Dvořák composed his Slavonic Dances in two sets — Op. 46 (1878) and Op. 72 (1886) — originally for piano duet, and they caused an immediate sensation when championed by Brahms. Both sets draw on Czech folk dance forms: furiant, dumka, polka, and skočná, dressed in Dvořák's gift for vivid orchestral colour. The Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic, a long-established German ensemble with an extensive international touring history, delivers these dances with warmth and rhythmic vitality under the Finnish conductor Leif Segerstam. Together they bring both drive and lyricism to music that remains among the most joyful in the orchestral repertoire. Awarded three stars by the Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music.
