Feinberg - Piano Sonatas Nos. 7-12
Catalog Number: BIS1414
A visionary journey through Feinberg’s later sonatas, where chromatic turbulence, luminous stillness and intimate farewell coexist in music of searching intensity and poetic restraint.
Classics Today 10/10; BBC Music Magazine 5 stars; International Record Review: outstanding; Fanfare: The Want List.
These sonatas trace the arc of a singular creative voice moving from Scriabinesque chromatic fervour to a language of distilled clarity. The Seventh and Eighth Sonatas stand as secret masterpieces: architecturally bold, rich in polyphony and tonal tension, they unfold vast inner dramas—bells toll, fugato erupts, and radiant constellations of harmony dissolve into murmured light.
With the Ninth and Tenth, written under the shadow of war, conflict and introspection coexist: combative gestures, spectral lyricism and moments of grave contemplation reveal a composer unwilling to renounce imagination even in adversity. The Eleventh deepens this inwardness, contrasting chorale-like austerity with restless, searching lines.
In the Twelfth Sonata, simplicity becomes luminous. The opening Sonatina unfolds in suspended innocence, while the Intermezzo and Improvisation turn toward memory and farewell, their refined textures and veiled quotations suggesting an artist looking back with tenderness and quiet resignation. Throughout, the pianism balances intellectual rigour with poetic intensity, illuminating the expressive breadth of this remarkable cycle.
