Fernström - Symphony No.6
Catalog Number: BIS903
This album presents orchestral works by Swedish composer John Fernström (1897–1961), including his Symphonic Prologue Op.88, Symphony No.6 Op.40, and the lyrical Intimate Miniatures for string orchestra. Once widely performed in Sweden, Fernström’s music blends post-romantic clarity with rhythmic vitality and imaginative color. Here it is brought vividly to life by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under Cecilia Rydinger Alin and Musica Vitae led by Wojciech Rajski.
This album presents a portrait of John Fernström (1897–1961), a Swedish composer of Chinese birth whose large and varied output included twelve symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and choral works. Fernström, long celebrated in Sweden but later unjustly neglected, combined impressionistic color with classical forms, creating music that is both lyrical and powerful. His Symphonic Prologue Op.88 (1949) opens with solemn grandeur before unfolding in festive sonata form; the expansive Symphony No.6 Op.40 (1939) is a dramatic and anti-romantic work, praised for its clarity, rhythmic drive, and monumental style; and the early Intimate Miniatures Op.2 are charming, rhythmically intricate miniatures for strings. Together, these works reveal Fernström’s individuality and craftsmanship, interpreted here by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under Cecilia Rydinger Alin and the string orchestra Musica Vitae led by Wojciech Rajski.
