Finnish Chamber Music

Finnish Chamber Music
This recording explores Finnish chamber music across the first half of the 20th century. At its heart lies Toivo Kuula’s Trio in A major, a monumental 55-minute work whose sweeping melodies, rhythmic vitality, and passionate contrasts reveal both the promise and raw intensity of a composer seen as Sibelius’s natural successor. Written in 1908 and premiered to great acclaim, the Trio remains a powerful testament to Kuula’s short-lived genius. Complementing it are three shorter pieces by later Finnish composers: Aarre Merikanto’s Preludio for violin and piano, composed during the Second World War; Usko Meriläinen’s Opusculum, an inventive miniature for solo violin first heard at the 1965 Sibelius Violin Competition; and Leif Segerstam’s Poem for violin and piano, a freely flowing adagio described by the composer as music “straight from the heart.” Together, these works span impressionism, modernism, and expressive lyricism, offering a vivid portrait of Finland’s chamber music tradition.
