Karl Goldmark and Jean Sibelius belonged to different generations and cultures, yet shared a striking musical kinship: both were accomplished violinists who weathered financial and political hardship, absorbed the influence of Mendelssohn and Wagner, and wrote enduring music for their own instrument. Their lives briefly intersected in Vienna in 1890–91, when the young Sibelius studied composition with the older master – a connection that inspired Sueye Park to pair their works here. At the album’s heart is Goldmark’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 28, a sweeping showpiece that blends Hungarian colour with German Romanticism, set alongside a group of Sibelius’s shorter gems: the late Suite JS 185, the songful Two Serious Melodies, Op. 77, and the vivid Humoresques, Op. 87. Park is partnered throughout by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under conductor Valentin Egel.
