Bach-inspired numerology and chorale meditation unfold in the harpsichord work on “Vor deinen Thron tret ich hiermit”, while the hushed miniatures of Silenzio grow out of near-silence into fragile, glowing sonorities. The ecstatic Dancer on a Tightrope pits violin virtuosity against a piano part transformed into a percussion instrument, evoking the peril and elation of life lived on the edge. Suslin’s Capriccio über die Abreise reflects the psychological turmoil of emigration, and his witty choral settings of Daniil Kharms reveal an undercurrent of absurdity and melancholy.
