Haukur Tómasson (b.1960) has established himself as one of Iceland's leading composers, known for music that combines high energy with clear structure using mathematical principles such as the Fibonacci series and the golden section. Flute Concerto No.1 (1997) and No.2 (2001), brilliantly performed by Sharon Bezaly, demand maximum attention to detail alongside the overall architectural sweep, and range from the radiant opening Calmo of No.2 to episodes of scintillating brilliance. Between them stands Skíma (2001–02), a concerto for the unusual combination of two double basses and orchestra, featuring soloists Hávarður Tryggvason and Valur Pálsson. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Bernharður Wilkinson.
