Haydn - Complete Solo Keyboard Music, Vol.7 - Esterházy Sonatas II
Cannes Classical Award; BBC Music Magazine 5 stars; Music Web International: outstanding.
Haydn's keyboard sonatas offer a kaleidoscopic view of his development, from the influence of the Viennese composer Wagenseil to a fully personal and often humorous voice. This seventh volume of Ronald Brautigam's complete recording includes three sonatas from the set dedicated to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy – No. 39 in D major, No. 40 in E flat major and No. 41 in A major, with its witty Menuet al rovescio, which runs backwards – together with the Sonata in C minor, one of Haydn's most intense and searching works for the keyboard. Brautigam plays a fortepiano by Paul McNulty after Anton Walter.
