HK Gruber (b.1943) is one of the best-known figures in contemporary music, known for his darkly ironic yet lyrical idiom drawing on Berg, Stravinsky and cabaret. Busking (2007), receiving its world première here, is written for the unusual combination of trumpet, accordion, banjo and string orchestra, with Håkan Hardenberger as the trumpet soloist. Nebelsteinmusik (1988), Gruber's Violin Concerto No.2, is a work of heartfelt intimacy dedicated to Gottfried von Einem, performed here by Katarina Andreasson. The Violin Concerto No.1 (1978, rev. 1992), subtitled 'aus schatten duft gewebt' and dedicated to Ernst Kovacic, completes a triptych showcasing Gruber's range from the playful and subversive to the deeply lyrical. The Swedish Chamber Orchestra is conducted by the composer himself.
