Holmboe - Complete Symphonies
Vagn Holmboe (1909–96) is widely regarded as the most important Danish symphonist after Carl Nielsen. His thirteen symphonies span more than half a century, from the compact First Symphony for chamber orchestra of 1935 to the works of his final years. Holmboe developed a highly personal technique of 'metamorphosis', in which themes grow and transform organically, and his music combines Nordic clarity with the rhythmic energy of the folk music he studied in his youth. The set includes the 'Sinfonia rustica' (No. 3), the wartime 'Sinfonia Sacra' (No. 4) with the Jutland Opera Choir, the 'Sinfonia boreale' (No. 8) and the Sinfonia in memoriam. Owain Arwel Hughes conducts the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra – the orchestra that, in an earlier guise, gave the première of Holmboe's First Symphony in 1938.
