Karg-Elert - Pastels & Impressions
Catalog Number: BIS1084
Sigfrid Karg-Elert's atmospheric organ music: the Seven Pastels from the Lake of Constance, Symphonic Chorale, Three Impressions and Passacaglia and Fugue on BACH, played by Hans Fagius on the Frobenius organ of Aarhus Cathedral.
Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877–1933) is one of the most original personalities in the history of the organ, a composer of vast output who created a distinctly Impressionistic and expressive language for the instrument. His Seven Pastels from the Lake of Constance Op.96 are his most celebrated works — atmospheric miniatures with evocative titles such as 'The Soul of the Lake', 'Landscape in Mist', 'The Legend of the Mountain' and 'Hymn to the Stars'. The Symphonic Chorale Op.87 No.1 'Ach bleib mit deiner Gnade' and Three Impressions Op.72 show his broader scope. The Passacaglia and Fugue on BACH Op.150 provides a monumental conclusion to this portrait of a composer who deserves to be much better known. Hans Fagius plays the 1928 Frobenius organ of Aarhus Cathedral, Denmark.
