Kelemen - Archetypon II
Catalog Number: BIS842
Croatian composer Milko Kelemen (b. 1924) is represented here by five works spanning three decades, from the orchestral Composé (1967) to Archetypon II (1996), a tribute to Bruckner on the centenary of his death. Performed by the RTV Zagreb Orchestra, Ensemble 2E2M, and the SWF Symphony Orchestra under various conductors, this disc offers a compelling survey of Kelemen's distinctive modernist language.
Milko Kelemen was born in Podravska Slatina, Croatia, in 1924. A professor of composition at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart and founder of the Zagreb Music Biennale, he has been a central figure in European new music since the 1960s.
Archetypon II "For Anton" (1996) was commissioned by the Stuttgart State Orchestra and dedicated to the memory of Anton Bruckner on the centenary of his death. The work presents six archetypes — Tremendum, Fascinans, Mirum, Sanctum, Energicum, and Majestas — drawing on a theme from the slow movement of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony as a point of departure.
The Nonet for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and string quintet (1993) is organized in three connected sections, its contrapuntal writing shaped by strategically placed fermatas that articulate the formal structure. It was premiered by Ensemble 2E2M under Paul Méfano.
Composé for two pianos and three orchestral groups (1967) was premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival with Aloys and Alfons Kontarsky as soloists. Its five sections culminate in a striking cadenza featuring the sound of rattling chains dragged across a tam-tam.
Die Richter for double chorus a cappella (1975), drawn from the ballet-opera Apocalyptica, is built in two overlapping sections that trace an arc from a dance of joy rising to ecstasy before subsiding into resignation.
Infinity for orchestra (1979) unfolds through static harmonic sequences based on intervals of thirds and seconds, traversing the full pitch range of the orchestra multiple times in a meditative exploration of musical space.
