The Violin Concerto reveals a different facet of Klami’s art: melodies whose true character emerges through instrumental color and rhythmic vitality rather than thematic transformation. In its revised form, the concerto gains structural clarity and expressive focus, culminating in a spirited finale touched by Stravinskian energy. The first act of the unfinished ballet Whirls ventures further still, its elemental imagery drawn from the Kalevala and cast in harmonies that at times approach free atonality. Here Klami’s imagination turns atmospheric and dramatic, driven by swirling motion and bold orchestral textures.
