Kroumata
Catalog Number: BIS932
Five composers, one irresistible force: Sweden's Kroumata percussion ensemble at their peak. From Cage's rattling Third Construction to Sandström's explosive Kroumata Pieces, this is percussion music at its most inventive and thrilling.
Sweden's celebrated Kroumata ensemble — six percussionists playing together since 1978 — present a wide-ranging programme spanning six decades of percussion music. John Cage's Third Construction (1941) opens with its characteristic mix of tin cans, rattles and lion's roar, while Ch'ien-Hui Houng's Le Récit de cinq marimbas brings fascinatingly unconventional marimba playing inspired by the 1993 International Percussion Festival in Taipei. Georg Katzer's Schlagmusik 2, premièred at the Berlin Biennale in 1991, moves from hesitant, fragmentary beginnings to forceful rhythmic hammering. Henrik Strindberg's Ursprung-Glintor draws on ancient African clay drums and other hand-held instruments for its rhythmically pulsating energy. The programme closes with Sven-David Sandström's Kroumata Pieces (1995) — an orgy of rhythms on drumskins and gongs, written in just ten days by the composer who has contributed more works to Kroumata's repertoire than anyone else.
