Few melodies travelled as widely as 'La Spagna', the Renaissance tune heard here in setting after setting by composers ranging from Josquin Desprez and Francesco da Milano to Diego Ortiz, Antonio de Cabezón, Michael Praetorius and Gaspar Sanz. Gregorio Paniagua and his Atrium Musicae de Madrid follow the theme and its 'Spagnoletta' cousins through more than forty miniatures spanning the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The performances draw on an extraordinary battery of instruments – vihuela, viols, recorders, harpsichord, spinet, positive organ, Spanish guitar and a host of drums and percussion – making for a collection as inventive as it is scholarly. Recorded in 1980 in a 17th-century Madrid chapel, it is a vivid reminder that, long before recordings, a good tune was already an international commodity.
