Jón Leifs (1899–1968) was born in Sólheimar, Iceland, and studied in Germany, where he developed a unique musical language rooted in Icelandic folk tradition and landscape — rugged, austere and entirely personal. His piano music includes the dreamlike Víkurdraumur (Rêverie), the Torrek Intermezzo Op.1 No.2, his Four Pieces Op.21, and evocative character pieces such as the Íslandsfarardrápa (Icelandic Prelude), Rimnalag (Icelandic Ballad) and Icelandic Dances. Annie Leifs brings both technical command and deep familiarity to this remarkable repertoire, much of it receiving its world première recording here.
