James MacMillan (b.1959) is one of the most prominent British composers of his generation, known for music of intense emotional commitment rooted in his Scottish Catholic background. Almost a decade separates the Sinfonietta (1991) from the two later works on this disc. Cumnock Fair (1998/99) is a world première recording, written for string orchestra and piano (Graeme McNaught) and taking its title from a traditional gathering in Ayrshire. Symphony No.2 (1999), also a world première recording here, marks a significant step in MacMillan's symphonic development. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the composer himself, brings committed advocacy to all three works.
