Austrian composer HK Gruber (b.1943) is unusual in treating light music not as something to parody but as an active ingredient of his art. Manhattan Broadcasts (1962–64), a diptych for light orchestra, is a lovingly detailed Viennese reflection of American dance-band music, moving from the slinky Tammany Hall to the bluesy Radio City. The Cello Concerto, commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation and premiered by Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood in 1989, is played here by Robert Cohen, and the two-part Zeitfluren (Timescapes) completes the programme. Gruber himself conducts the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Gramophone: outstanding; International Record Review: outstanding.
