Five masterworks for flute and piano, spanning from late Romanticism to the mid-twentieth century. Francis Poulenc's Sonata (1956–57) is one of the most beloved works in the genre, full of wit and lyrical charm. Frank Martin's Ballade (1939) is a more concentrated work of considerable emotional depth. Carl Reinecke's 'Undine' Sonata Op.167 (1882) draws on the water-sprite legend of Fouqué, blending late-Romantic lyricism with atmospheric programme music. Bohuslav Martinů's Sonata (1945), composed in New York, is full of rhythmic vitality in his later neo-classical style. Messiaen's Le merle noir (1951) closes the programme with a vivid evocation of the blackbird's song. Sharon Bezaly is joined by the Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam.
