Mozart - Music for Piano and Wind Quintet
Catalog Number: BIS1132
Mozart for wind quintet – a combination he never wrote for. The Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet plays the great Quintet K 452 with Stephen Hough, alongside superb arrangements of his music for mechanical organ and glass harmonica.
The standard wind quintet was only established by Anton Reicha in 1813–14, so Mozart left no music for this combination – but his output for various wind ensembles is rich. The centrepiece here is the Quintet in E flat major, K 452, for piano and winds, which Mozart himself considered one of his finest works, played with pianist Stephen Hough. Around it the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet presents arrangements by its flautist Michael Hasel, including the two great Fantasias in F minor, K 594 and K 608, and the Andante, K 616, originally written for mechanical clockwork organs, as well as the Adagio and Rondo, K 617, for glass harmonica and other short pieces. The result is a fresh, colourful perspective on late Mozart.
