Mozart - Piano Concerto, No.21
Catalog Number: BIS205
Two of Mozart's most beloved works on one disc: the radiant Piano Concerto No.21 in C major – made famous by the film Elvira Madigan – and the glorious Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola, with Staffan Scheja and the Stockholm Sinfonietta.
Mozart completed his Piano Concerto No.21 in C major, K 467, in Vienna in March 1785, and it was premiered only days later to an enthusiastic audience that included his father Leopold. Behind its bright and festive surface lies a work of surprising harmonic boldness, and its Andante found a new audience through Bo Widerberg's film Elvira Madigan. The Sinfonia concertante in E flat major, K 364, dates from the summer of 1779 in Salzburg; Mozart wrote the viola part in scordatura, with the strings tuned a semitone higher, to give the instrument a more brilliant sound. Staffan Scheja is the soloist in the concerto, and Bernt Lysell (violin) and Nils-Erik Sparf (viola) share the spotlight in the Sinfonia concertante. The Stockholm Sinfonietta is conducted by Jan-Olav Wedin.
