A rich anthology of Nordic song. Yrjö Kilpinen (1892–1959), one of the great Scandinavian song composers, is represented by his Lieder um den Tod Op.62 and two sets of Lieder der Liebe (Opp.60–61), all to texts by Christian Morgenstern, performed by baritone Rolf Leanderson and pianist Helene Leanderson. Bass-baritone Knut Skram and pianist Eva Knardahl contribute five songs by Edvard Grieg, and Skram is also joined by the Gothenburg Chamber Orchestra for Grieg's dramatic ballad Den Bergtekner Op.32. The programme concludes with Ture Rangström's evocative cycle Från Kung Eriks Visor (From King Erik's Songs) to texts by Gustaf Fröding, in which Skram brings his rich voice and narrative power to this world of medieval Swedish legend.
