Poulenc - Complete Works for Two Pianos
Catalog Number: BIS593
Wit, elegance and a touch of melancholy: Francis Poulenc's complete music for two pianos, including the sparkling Concerto in D minor with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, performed by Roland Pöntinen and Love Derwinger.
Francis Poulenc was once called 'the Fernandel of music' – a nod to the French actor's blend of mischief, faith and warm humour – and his music for two pianos shows all these sides of his personality. The Concerto for Two Pianos (1932) mixes Mozartian grace, music-hall wit and a gamelan-like shimmer, while the Sonata for Two Pianos is one of his most serious and searching works. The programme is completed by the early Sonata for Piano Four Hands, the Capriccio after Le Bal masqué, the waltz L'Embarquement pour Cythère and the Élégie in memory of Marie-Blanche de Polignac. Swedish pianists Roland Pöntinen and Love Derwinger are joined in the Concerto by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä.
