Printemps
Catalog Number: BIS536
A vivid portrait of 20th-century French wind writing—from Ibert’s piquant sparkle and Tomasi’s birdsong reveries to Milhaud’s medieval-tinged suite—shaped with an airy blend, supple color, and rhythmic poise.
This album traces the French ear for wind color with music that speaks fluently in many dialects. Ibert’s Trois pièces brèves sets the tone—concise, witty, and lightly spiced with Gallic humor—before Tomasi’s Printemps expands the palette with alto saxophone, awakening birds and their dance in supple, luminous lines. Milhaud’s La Cheminée du roi René, refashioned from film music, conjures a Middle Ages of pageant, aubade, and chase, its elegance animated by that composer’s playful, polytonal esprit rather than pastiche. Koechlin’s Wind Septet deepens the sonority with cor anglais and saxophone, its sequence of character pieces unfolding with serene craft and pastoral warmth. Françaix’s Quintet No. 1 restores sheer joie de vivre—fleet, transparent, and rhythmically alert—while Bozza’s Scherzo closes with crisp brilliance. Throughout, the ensemble’s clarity of blend and buoyant phrasing let textures breathe, revealing the music’s grace, wit, and quietly poetic radiance.
