Ravel - Arrangements for Guitar
Catalog Number: BIS886
Ravel never wrote for the guitar - but he came close. Anders Miolin's astonishing transcriptions, played on custom ten-string and alto guitars, transform piano and vocal masterpieces from the Pavane to Ma Mère l'Oye into idiomatic guitar showpieces.
Ravel promised Segovia a guitar piece but never delivered it - so guitarist Anders Miolin has done it for him, posthumously realising that unfulfilled pledge through a series of remarkable transcriptions. Using specially built ten-string and alto guitars with extended bass ranges, Miolin brings an idiomatic guitar voice to some of Ravel's most celebrated piano and vocal works, including the Pavane pour une Infante défunte, Alborada del gracioso, and the complete Ma Mère l'Oye suite. The programme also features the haunting Le Gibet from Gaspard de la nuit, the witty miniatures Berceuse sur le nom de Fauré and Menuet sur le nom de Haydn, four movements from Le Tombeau de Couperin, and the late Chanson romanesque from Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. In several pieces Miolin had to devise entirely new guitar techniques to capture Ravel's pianistic textures, resulting in a recording that reveals unexpected facets of this most colourful of composers.
