Recorder Concertos

Recorder Concertos
Penguin Guide 3 stars. This programme brings together two masters of the Baroque concerto in works that illuminate the expressive and technical richness of the recorder and bassoon. Telemann’s writing reveals an intimate understanding of both instruments: the recorder gleams in its upper register, agile and florid, while the bassoon ranges widely, by turns noble, lyrical, and playfully humorous. In the Double Concerto, their voices intertwine with elegance and wit; in the C major concerto, the four-movement sonata form allows the soloist to explore a remarkable palette of tonal nuance, from cantabile warmth to brilliant articulation. Vivaldi responds with music of striking directness and color. The F major bassoon concerto balances noble tuttis and lyrical introspection with sudden contrasts and gently ironic turns. In La Notte, an early example of programmatic imagination, shadows and restless spirits animate the night, the recorder’s trills and rapid figurations conjuring both menace and dream. Throughout, the performers shape the dialogue between soloists and strings with stylistic assurance, allowing clarity of texture and expressive character to emerge with natural vitality.
