Sallinen - Symphonies
Catalog Number: BIS607
Two symphonies by Aulis Sallinen (b.1935) — the lyrical Fourth and the 'Washington Mosaics' Fifth — plus the orchestral prelude Shadows, performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under James DePreist.
Aulis Sallinen (b.1935) has thought 'symphonically' throughout his creative life. Symphony No.4 Op.49 (1979), commissioned by the city of Turku for its 150th anniversary, aims to combine good humour with lyrical depth — its three movements moving from an Andante poco giocoso through 'Dona nobis pacem' to a finale with vaguely eastern rhythmic ambience. Shadows Op.52 (1982) is a brief but atmospheric orchestral prelude. Symphony No.5 Op.57 'Washington Mosaics' (1984–87, rev.1987), named for the city where it was composed, alternates two large 'Mosaic' movements with three shorter Intermezzi. The Malmö Symphony Orchestra is conducted by James DePreist.
