This anthology traces a distinctive Nordic choral line: devotional simplicity and communal song on one hand, and finely wrought modern colour on the other. The programme moves from Swedish sacred lyricism—where melody feels close to the vernacular—to Danish pieces that balance elegance, wit, and text-sensitive transparency. At its centre stands a modernist pillar: Ingvar Lidholm’s Laudi, where Latin scripture is set with stark contrasts, luminous sonorities, and an expressive directness that helped shape the “new” Scandinavian choral sound described in the notes (pp. 4–6). Elsewhere, Torquato Tasso madrigals bring Italianate poise and sensual detail, while midsummer songs and folk materials catch the scent of landscape and speech rhythm. Across these varied idioms, the choirs favour clarity, unanimity of attack, and a cultivated warmth—letting the music’s spiritual gravity and quiet radiance emerge without strain.
