Alfred Schnittke (1934–98) is represented here by two major works. The Concerto grosso No.1 (1977) is among his most celebrated pieces, combining Baroque formal structures with his characteristic polystylism — tonal and atonal worlds colliding. This recording features the world première of his 1988 arrangement for flute, oboe, harpsichord, prepared piano and strings, with Sharon Bezaly and Christopher Cowie as soloists. Symphony No.9 (1997), one of his last works, was left unfinished at the composer's death; the reconstruction by Alexander Raskatov (2006) realises the surviving sketches with care and brings this profound, quietly valedictory work to completion.
