For the fourth instalment of his Schubert+ series, Can Çakmur turns to the world of the impromptu—exploring both its early history and the way this free-standing, poetic form took shape in the 19th century. At the centre of the album is Schubert’s celebrated set of Four Impromptus, D 899, surrounded by pieces that illuminate their lineage and afterglow.
Two Impromptus by Jan Václav Voříšek open a window onto a composer admired by Beethoven and often seen as a precursor to Schubert’s keyboard style. The programme then reaches forward to Chopin and Scriabin, whose contributions to the genre show how the impromptu became a vehicle for capturing a single moment, emotion, or atmosphere with striking immediacy.
The Schubert+ series places Schubert’s major piano works in dialogue with music by other composers, and Çakmur’s earlier releases have been warmly received:
“With Can Çakmur you are returned to your first sense of wonder and revelation at discovering Schubert’s genius.”
— International Piano
“Çakmur [is] remarkable from start to finish, with irresistible colours, refined nuances and a clear tone.”
— Crescendo
“Çakmur’s phrasing and his use of dynamics and colours are overwhelming.”
— Pizzicato
